Many realities exist. People continuously shift, among sometimes physical, sometimes virtual or even spiritual realities. Design manipulates the boundaries between the realties, creating experiences that are not experienced otherwise.
“…the ubiquitous and adaptive systems that our students design weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life. This implies that the boundaries between the real and the virtual are blurring. But what are the implications of this merger? How to respond to these new challenges and opportunities?” –ID’X
Introduction Presentation (White Paper)
“Our theme ‘realities’ is about that what is, and that what could be. Design has the power of societal transformation. In ‘realities’ we aim to use this power to make positive change. ”
— Joep Frens
“Das Thema Wirklichkeiten kann ein Forum sein um unterschiedliche Realitäten miteinander zu verknüpfen. Wenn wir davon ausgehen, dass Realität individuell ist, dann ist es eine Herausforderung für Industriedesigner unterschiedliche Subjekte und Objekte mit intelligenten und interaktiven Konzepten zu vernetzen, um auf diesem Wege Projektionsflächen für individuelle Realitäten zu schaffen.

Realität ist eine Interpretation von Phantasie (Yello)
The theme realities can be a forum to link to different realities together. If we assume that reality is individual, then it is a challenge for industrial designers to network different subjects and objects trough intelligent and interactive concepts; to create an interface for individual realities.

“The Tao that can be spoken of is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name.
The nameless is the beginning of heaven and earth. The name is the mother of the ten thousand things.
Send your desires away and you will see the mystery. Be filled with desire and you will see only the manifestation.”
[From ‘The Tao Te Ching’ by Lao Tzu (400BC)]
— Matthias Rauterberg
“The theme Realities for me is about changing the reality we all live in through products/systems that are consciously designed to change reality in a positive way.
To actually transform society with these products/systems they will have to be purchased by consumers by their free will and therefore must be “a good deal” on the market. This is where I think I can make my contribution within the theme.”
— Maurits de Koning
“For me, this theme is about designing for present and upcoming everyday realities, it is about designing artifacts and interactions that fit in our ever changing everyday world.”
— Saskia Bakker
“Realities are in a steady flow and therefore a essential part of the design process.” — Gregor Görres
“The theme Realities for me is about the changing nature of our everyday world, and the way design participates in these changes. Design is about transforming everyday reality into a better one, based on a vision on progress, and incorporating technological possibilities in a skilled and elegant way.”
— Philip Ross
